LWVTC sues Tarrant County over racial gerrymandering

LWVTC | Published on 8/15/2025

Yesterday, the Texas Civil Rights Project with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP filed a petition on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Tarrant County and League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Fort Worth Council 4568 against County Judge Tim O'Hare, Tarrant County, and the Tarrant County Commissioners Court.

We object to the unprecedented, unnecessary mid-decade redistricting that reduced the electoral power of Black and Latino voters in Tarrant County.

Our League did not take this decision lightly. We assessed the potential risk to our organization, the importance of our relationships with elected officials, and the additional resource constraints for our all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. We are putting our mission first. Our mission to empower voters and defend democracy means that we must call out the unfair and undemocratic redistricting process, the racial discrimination, and dilution of the voting power of members of our Black and Brown communities. If one of us is impacted, we are all impacted by the erosion of our democratic principles.
